Young Carers' Sailing Day, Wednesday 15th August.

As in previous years we will be welcoming our good friends, Towcester Rotary and a group of young carers for a day's sailing on Wednesday 15th August.

There will be approximately 30 people attending so we need quite a few volunteers to help out on the day covering all our normal sailing roles and usual timings.

Elaine will be catering on the day and Towcester Rotary have kindly offered to treat volunteers to lunch!

If you can help would you please advise who is organising the day.

Come to Plas Menai 26th-28th October 2018

Plas Menai is the Welsh National Watersports Centre and is situated on the Menai Straits between Caernarfon and Bangor.

We will be returning to Plas Menai again on the weekend of 27-28th October 2018. It is simply just too good not to go again!

We will be sailing Dinghies, Catamarans and Keelboats on the stunning Menai Straits. We will have the choice of the centre’s selection of boats, both power and sail. All you have to do is choose! (Or you don’t have to sail, just take it easy and explore the local area.)

The accommodation and meals are great. The building itself is accessible, and fully accessible rooms are also available. Breakfast, a packed lunch and evening meals are included.

On the water we will be looked after by experienced and qualified centre staff.

All this and much more for £175 (£92 for non-sailors) to be paid before 15th September.

Message from Mike Hulands

As with previous years I have been nominated to be the Northampton Sailability ‘lead’ (event coordinator) for the day. Let’s hope that I will be able to actually attend on the day – unlike last year!

Although still a few months away, I should be most grateful to learn if you would be able to help on the day. Previous years have been most successful earning praise from the Hansa association - thanks to our willing volunteers!

Please let me know if you will be able to help out and if you would like any specific “duties”. I will then try and compile a list.

Also, perhaps talking to your regular ‘students’/members, if you would like to enter the event perhaps crewing for a regular member. I will be arranging for an Access ‘booking form’ to be available on the admin table.

As well as general “do everything/anything” assistance (entrants may need assistance launching and getting in/out of boats for e.g.) we will need designated volunteers for;

Launch of new RS Venture Connect, Saturday 28th April, 3pm.

As you may know Nene Valley Rotary Club has been raising funds to buy an RS Venture Connect to replace one of our Martin 16’s , which has reached the end of its useful life.

The new boat has arrived and we will be holding an event to celebrate its launch. You are therefore invited to join us on Saturday 28th April at 3.00 pm for bubbly and light refreshments and to see our latest boat take to the water.

Members of Nene Valley Rotary and the Wooden Spoon Charity and others who have helped with the funding will be present so it would be good if as many of us as possible could be there on the day to help keep Sailability in the public eye.

This might also be a good opportunity to invite any contacts you may have from the various clubs, companies and charities which support us by way of a thank you.

If you are able to join us could you please advise to provide numbers for catering.

We look forward to seeing you on the day. - Northampton Sailability Committee

Rockin' RoadRunner Club Festival, Sunday 16th September, Abington Park. 12pm - 5pm

Meg and Richard Elliott have organised Sailability's presence at this exhibition for a few years now and each year they have been more ambitious.

It is held in an unenclosed area of the Park and hence attracts huge numbers of disabled and able bodied people so it’s a great shop window for us and similar organisations as well as a great day out.

This year the RYA is going to promote our involvement as well as lending us the East Midlands event pack which includes an RYA gazebo so we will have a very high profile.

That means Meg and Richard need help. There is a huge amount going at the event on so we would like to see as many members and helpers as possible enjoying the festival and spending just a short time helping out on our pitch.

If one or two people can provide some help with setting up and taking down that would be even better.

Contact or to find out more.

If you can't help just come along anyway and have fun.

Information on the Rockin' RoadRunner Club including this event is available on their website:

'Marmaris to Messolonghi via the Corinth Canal' Tuesday November 6th

NOSCA (Northampton Off Shore Sailing Association) have extended a warm invitation to all Sailability members to their monthly meeting on Tuesday 6th November at 19:30 for 20:00 at Northampton and County Club, George Row, access from Angel Street.

Bob and Wendy sailed from Plymouth on 1 June 2008 in their 12 metre Hunter Legend Carrig Hannah. Several NOSCA members have over the past 10 years shared in her adventures crossing Biscay, following the trade winds down the Portuguese coast, through the Straits of Gibraltar and voyaging east across the Mediterranean to Turkey.

This presentation is of their voyage in 2016 from Marmaris (Turkey) to Messolonghi in Greece sailing across the Aegean via the Greek Dodecanese and Cyclades Islands to achieving an ambition of many years, transiting the Corinth Canal. From Corinth, their route took them through the Gulfs of Corinth and Patras to Messolonghi a unique port situated on the juncture of the Gulf of Patras and the South Ionian Sea.

The Plan was to spend two months enjoying as the sailing pilots advise ‘exciting sailing and summer winds which sometimes force you to hole up for a day or three, with an enormous variety of anchorages and small harbours, but no full service marinas.’ Cruising plans are dominated by the Meltemi, from generally northerly directions, which sets in during late June, together early in the season by the Sirocco, strong southerlies, presaging storms.

This presentation might otherwise be titled. ‘When Passages Don’t go to Plan.’ Or as the construction engineer of our sailing partnership puts it ‘Intervals of sailing between visiting piles of old stones’.

Evening Social at Northampton Sailing Club. Thursday 22nd November

Time: 18:30 - 21:30

Cost: £7

The talk will be 6.30-7.30 on wildlife at Pitsford Reservoir. Hot supper 7.30. Bar will be open from 6.30.
